A Rivian that won’t start here is usually a 12V failure. Inland heat and long warehouse sits drain that small battery first. The R1T or R1S looks bricked, with dark screens and quiet locks. The high-voltage pack can still hold miles, so don’t assume it’s empty. Run the 12V checks below. If that pack is also low, you need 240-volt charging on site.

Heat and warehouse sits brick the small battery

Fontana and Ontario are where a lot of these trucks sit between shifts. ACS 2019-2023 puts Fontana at 214,169 people and Ontario at 180,547. Those cities hold warehouse rows and airport lots that bake all day. A parked R1T still feeds cameras, modules, and cabin computers. Valley heat raises that drain. By the end of a long sit, the 12V can sag. It may be too weak to close the contactors. The truck won’t start. The last range reading can still look fine.

Southern California Edison serves Fontana and Ontario. Riverside Public Utilities serves the city of Riverside. Colton owns its own electric utility inside city limits. Moreno Valley splits between SCE and Moreno Valley Utility. Rancho Cucamonga is mostly SCE, plus Rancho Cucamonga Municipal Utility in a southeast pocket. None of those bills wake a truck that’s already dark in a lot. Home rates and rebates don’t apply on a warehouse row. You need the 12V alive, or you need a mobile 240-volt hookup.

San Bernardino County housing is older than Riverside County housing. ACS 2019-2023 puts 43.8% of San Bernardino County units as built before 1980. Riverside County sits at 30.2%. City checks in the same vintage show San Bernardino at 60.9% pre-1980. Ontario is 50.7%. Eastvale is only 2.2%. An older panel at home can make overnight charging flaky. That’s a driveway problem. A bricked truck in a Fontana lot is a 12V problem. Treat them as different calls.

Corona traffic on the 91 cooks a truck left in a driveway. Menifee heat does the same. Temecula and Murrieta housing is newer. ACS 2019-2023 puts Temecula pre-1980 housing at 6.5% and Murrieta at 6.2%. High Desert cities are younger too. Victorville is 19.6% pre-1980. The climate still isn’t gentle. A sit in Adelanto or Hesperia after Cajon is hot and long. The 12V still pays that bill.

What a dead 12V actually does to an R1T or R1S

The large pack turns the motors. The 12V runs locks, lights, and the center display. It also runs the relays that connect the pack. When the small battery dies, the truck can look fully dead. You may see a black screen and a fob that won’t unlock. There may be no ready chime. Error messages can pop if the screen still has a last bit of power. None of that proves the propulsion pack is empty.

The climb toward Yucaipa uses the big pack. So does I-15 toward Victorville. I-215 through Moreno Valley does too. Grades and cabin cooling use the big pack. Heat and always-on modules use both. A warehouse sit uses the small battery quietly, for hours. That’s the Inland Empire pattern that matches a Rivian that won’t start.

Banning sits on City of Banning Electric Utility, not SCE. Big Bear Lake and Big Bear City sit on Bear Valley Electric Service. Crestline and Lake Arrowhead stay on SCE. Those names matter when you’re plugging in at home. They don’t change how a 12V fails on a shoulder or in a lot.

Check the 12V under the frunk before you call a hook

The R1T and R1S 12V lives under the frunk, under a cover. Open the frunk if the release still works. If it doesn’t, use the manual frunk release in the owner’s manual. Don’t hunt for a hidden latch from a forum screenshot. Once it’s open, lift the cover. Look at the terminals. Corrosion or a loose clamp is worth noting. A visual check won’t prove charge, but damage is a clue.

Try a display reboot, then a full vehicle reset

If any screen still glows, reboot before you assume the 12V is gone. A frozen computer can mimic a dead truck. A reset won’t add range. It can clear a stuck UI. Do the light reset first. Save the full reboot for a truck that’s silent.

Soft reset of the center display

Find the two scroll wheels on the steering wheel. Press and hold the left wheel and the right wheel together. Keep holding about 15 to 20 seconds, until the center display goes black. Then let go. The Rivian logo should return. Wait for the boot to finish. That’s the light reset. Use it for a frozen map, a dead touchscreen, or a laggy cluster.

Full vehicle reset

If the truck is silent, or the soft reset changed nothing, do the full reboot. Hold the hazard button and the right scroll wheel at the same time. The hazard button usually sits near the gear tunnel. Hold both for 20 to 30 seconds. The screens go dark as you hold. You may hear clicks or see lights flicker. Release when the truck looks dormant. The logo should come back, and the full system should boot. Give it a minute or two.

Both resets are safe. If they fail, you’re back to the 12V, the key, or an empty pack.

If the truck still won’t wake, check the key path

Software and the 12V are the usual suspects. The key is third. A truck that won’t see you looks fully dead. So does a truck with a flat 12V. Rule the key out before you call for a pack charge.

Key fob

A weak coin cell in the fob can stop the truck from seeing you. Open the fob the way the owner’s manual shows. Swap the cell for the type it lists. Even with a dead fob battery, try NFC. Hold the fob against the door-pillar pad. Try the in-cabin spot the manual names if that fails. The truck can read the chip without a live fob battery.

Phone key

Turn Bluetooth on. Open the Rivian app and let it finish loading. Install a pending update if the app asks. Force-close it and reopen. Confirm Bluetooth and location permissions. A dead phone can’t act as a key. Keep the physical key card with you. Tap it on the door-pillar NFC pad. That card still unlocks when the phone and fob both fail.

Metal warehouse walls can muddy Bluetooth. Step away from the trailer face and try again. That’s interference, not a failed pack. A dense lot in Ontario can do the same thing. So can a steel building in Fontana.

When a jump isn’t enough, you need 240V on site

A 12V jump can wake the computers. It doesn’t put highway miles in the pack. After a long sit, the high-voltage battery can be low too. Then the truck still won’t leave the lot. Operators in the network bring a 240V Level 2 source to the car. They use a native NACS plug, plus CCS or J1772 adapters for non-Tesla EVs. Typical charging time adds about 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes. That’s charging time, never an arrival time. The operator quotes before starting.
